How important is the U.S. Open Cup?
Here’s how Sounders FC coach Sigi Schmid addressed the issue after Monday’s practice. Seattle, the three-time defending Open Cup champ, hosts Chivas USA in a semifinal at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Starfire Stadium in Tukwila.
“I read a quote from Tim Howard the other week,” Schmid said in reference to this story with the U.S. men’s national team goalkeeper who plays for Everton in the English Premier League, “and (he was) asked if he was going to consider coming back to MLS at the end and he said, ‘Yeah, I’d love to come back.’ He goes, ‘Look at what like Seattle (has done) with the crowds and they’ve won three Open Cups.’ So obviously that resonates, because it is a championship. It’s something that the guys look forward to and if we can do four, we’re certainly not going to turn it away.”
