Saying goodbye to Roger (Friday links)

Couldn’t think of anything better than this classic to lead off the post. Covering Roger Levesque, who will retire next week, the past few years has been a pleasure.

Let’s get to some links:

* * *

— Here are a couple reports indicating the Sounders are continuing their pursuit of Spanish midfielder Joan Verdu.

— The Sounders FC U-23s host Washington Crossfire in a PDL playoff game at 7:30 p.m. Saturday night at Franklin Pierce Stadium. A couple local players earn mention on the PDL Team of the Week, including North Sound SeaWolves FC goalkeeper Andrew Wildfong.

— Around MLS, here’s a look at the midseason MVP race, Julian de Guzman was traded from Toronto to Dallas, Tyson Wahl was traded from Montreal to Colorado, and the Red Bulls (who are hunting for a DP) are getting healthy for Sunday’s game against the Sounders.

— Will Houston Dynamo star Geoff Cameron be transferred to Stoke City? That’s the talk leaguewide. Here are Cameron’s thoughts.

— FIFA.com has posted Olympic rosters for the men’s teams and women’s teams.

— Also from the Olympics, here’s a feature on USWNT star Abby Wambach, David Beckham apparently won’t be involved in torch lighting, and here’s a very revealing look at what goes on in the village with insight from Hope Solo among others.

— Sounders goalkeeper Andrew Weber offers some thoughts on the future of Arizona soccer.

— In a mix of other links, Chelsea defender John Terry was found not guilty in his racism trial (though I don’t think he’s rushing to Seattle for Wednesday’s friendly), Grant Wahl has this SI.com piece on the return of the New York Cosmos, the CONCACAF Gold Cup might be on the move, this man has the task of trying to rescue the state of refereeing in North America, and Liverpool has a mascot now?

— Here’s an early tickets-sales update from Kansas City for the U.S. Open Cup final on Aug. 8…
