Chelsea FC v. Sounders FC (Wednesday links)

chelsea.jpgAfter a few days of anticipation — OK, maybe not the same anticipation of previous friendlies, but a little nonetheless — the Sounders will host Chelsea FC at 6:30 p.m. tonight at CenturyLink Field.

By now you’ve heard all you need about the visitors: fifth time here, UEFA Champions League winners, etc.

In my story for today’s paper I touched about Seattle’s want to avoid embarrassment (like in last year’s friendly), but also that minutes in an otherwise meaningless game will carry significant meaning to two players Steve Zakuani and, of course, the retiring Roger Levesque.

* * *

— ChelseaFC.com was on the scene at Starfire on Tuesday, where the English team held a coaching camp for youth soccer players.

— Here’s a reminder that Sounders FC and artist Dale Chihuly will present a piece of commemorative artwork called the Blue Lion Spire to Chelsea in a prematch ceremony. This has been tradition for international friendlies since 2009.

— Goal.com gives the Sounders a B-plus grade so far. What do you think?

— Can you guess the only Sounder to make the top 20 of the Castrol Index for last week’s games?

— Around MLS, here are some leaguewide highlights from the first half of the season, Columbus forward Emilio Renteria was suspended and fined for this headbutt, and more bad news for the Crew came in the season-ending injury to Bernardo Anor.

— Regarding Americans abroad, apparently Fulham isn’t interested in losing Clint Dempsey, Ricardo Clark is looking for a new team (back to MLS? Houston?), and Terrence Boyd scored a pretty incredible goal.

— In other a couple other links, ESPN.com takes a look at the Cosmos return and SI.com has an Olympics women’s soccer preview.

— Speaking of which, here’s a video of encouragement for the Sounders Women’s star on the U.S. women’s national…
