For over a week, reports from South America have had Sounders FC midfielder Alvaro Fernandez going to Colombian club Deportivo Cali on loan. The move would presumably have opened up a DP slot on Seattle’s roster for a big international signing during the MLS transfer window, which closes Friday.
Well, the reports have changed as they often do during the transfer window, which some have rightly deemed the “silly season.”
According to stories here, here and here, Fernandez will apparently not be joining Deportivo Cali. That would appear to indicate the Uruguayan midfielder will be at training again today and remain with the Sounders this season (barring an unexpected trade).
That also would appear to indicate there won’t be a big addition in the coming days, though obviously nothing is set in stone just yet.
In other international news, Spanish midfielder Joan Verdu — who the Sounders have confirmed their interest in — has reportedly broken off contract talks with his club team Espanyol according to stories here and here.
The talk with Verdu in previous reports was that he was more likely to be an offseason acquisition if he did indeed agree to come to Seattle.
UPDATE 10:17 a.m. — Then, of course, there’s this tweet saying Verdu hasn’t closed the door on an Espanyol return.
