It’s official: Sounders sign Christian Tiffert as a designated player

Seattle Sounders FC Logo.jpgAs was reported in Germany earlier this morning, Sounders FC has signed German midfielder Christian Tiffert as designated player.

The move was facilitated by the trade of Alvaro Fernandez to Chicago earlier Friday, which opened up a DP slot on Seattle’s roster.

Tiffert, 30, will be added to the roster upon receipt of his P-1 visa.

“We wanted to bring in a player who is a central midfielder and has playmaking capabilities,” said coach Sigi Schmid in a news release. “Christian is a player who fits this mold and brings a lot of experience from the top league in Germany. His leadership and versatility make him a good fit for our club.”

Tiffert was the captain of FC Kaiserslautern, which plays in the top league in Germany called the Bundesliga. He was played 12 years overall in Germany and Austria, and led the Bundesliga with 17 assists in the 2010-11 season.

“We were extremely impressed with Christian during his visit to Seattle,” said Adrian Hanauer, part owner and general manager, in the release. “His character and mentality fit well with the culture we have established within the organization, both on the field and in the locker room. We believe Christian will help us in our push towards the playoffs and beyond.”

Tiffert is Sounders FC’s sixth DP in franchise history, following Freddie Ljungberg, Blaise Nkufo, Fernandez, Fredy Montero and Mauro Rosales.

I know you’ve been commenting about the move all morning (even earlier), but what do you think now that it’s official?
