Sounders reportedly sign German midfielder Christian Tiffert as a designated player

First, there were reports this morning from Germany that FC Kaiserslautern midfielder Christian Tiffert — a confirmed transfer-window target of the Sounders — had signed with Seattle.

Then, the German club confirmed the news on its website.

And then, agent Richard Motzkin of Wasserman Media Group confirmed Tiffert, their client, had signed with Seattle as a designated player.

The Sounders haven’t yet confirmed the news, but offered this statement:

“We are in advanced negotiations with Christian Tiffert. We will announce a signing when it becomes official.”

This would appear to be the big move fans were hoping for, and if Tiffert is indeed going to be a DP, as his agent noted, that would mean Seattle would have four on the roster.

Midfielder Alvaro Fernandez has been the Sounders DP most recently linked to an exit and had another long chat with coach Sigi Schmid after Thursday’s practice. Maybe it’s a clue, maybe it isn’t.

I’ll have more on this news throughout the day. Until then, what do you make of it?
