Mario Martinez expected in (Friday links)

A new face is expected at Sounders FC training this morning: Mario Martinez.

The Honduran midfielder, acquired on loan earlier this month, participated in a friendly with his national team Wednesday against Boca Juniors and was set to come to Seattle afterward.

Look for more updates throughout the day here and on my Twitter account. We’ll find out if he’ll be ready to go Saturday against Vancouver.

Let’s get to some links:

* * *

— First off, the English Premier League kicks off tomorrow and Clint Dempsey is garnering a lot of attention. According to the Fulham Twitter account, the American star won’t play in the team’s opener and wants to leave the club. Manager Martin Jol addressed the issue and mentioned that Liverpool never made Fulham an offer despite having interest in Dempsey. There’s also a report that the Texas native was fined for refusing to play. We’ll see how this one plays out.

— More locally, Vancouver captain Jay DeMerit is recovering from a concussion, so it’s unclear if he’ll be ready to go Saturday against the Sounders. What’s also noteworthy is center back Martin Bonjour is suspended due to yellow-card accumulation, so there could be a new look to the Whitecaps back line at CenturyLink Field.

— Also, here’s a reminder that Sunday’s reserve game has been pushed to 1 p.m. and, while admission is free (donations are encouraged), parking is $5 without a Starfire pass.

Here’s an interview with Megan Rapinoe, who starred in the Olympics and earlier with the Sounders Women.

— Around the league, are the Dynamo going to get a new owner? Maybe. D.C. United sent midfielder Danny Cruz to Philadelphia in exchange for forward Lionard Pajoy. In New York, the Red Bulls have signed English midfielder Lloyd Sam and parted ways with defender Babajide Ogunbiyi after he couldn’t pass a physical.

Eric Wynalda had to leave his post as interim coach of the NASL’s Atlanta Silverbacks due to his TV duties with FOX Soccer. On-loan defender Andrew Duran will now have his third coach in a matter of months.
