Rookie defender Andrew Duran suffers torn ACL while on loan

duran mug 2012.jpgAndrew Duran was back at Sounders FC training for the first time in about three months. The rookie defender had been out on loan with the Atlanta Silverbacks in the NASL for about three months.

Turns out his return wasn’t for a good reason.

Duran, 22, tore his left ACL, according to coach Sigi Schmid, and is expected to undergo surgery next week. The Creighton product had also suffered a torn ACL in his right knee during his sophomore season in 2008.

The knee issues don’t end there. Duran missed most of the 2010 college season with a torn meniscus in his right knee. He aggravated that injury this preseason and underwent arthroscopic surgery in March.

It has been a tough rookie year for Sounders FC’s 2012 MLS SuperDraft class. Duran (first round) and forward Babayele Sodade (second round) each suffered torn ACLs and are yet to make their first-team debuts.

Up until the injury, Schmid said the loan had been going well.

“He was playing and getting 90 minutes all the time, so that was good,” the coach said. “He was getting some play at outside back, which we wanted to see. … Then with the knee injury now he’s got to deal with that and the recovery. He’s been through an ACL injury before. This is other knee, so we’ll see how he comes through it.”
