Sounders FC’s Andy Rose suffered a broken rib in Saturday’s Cascadia Cup game against Vancouver, X-rays revealed this week. Late in the 2-0 win, the rookie midfielder was hit in his left side on a flying kick by Whitecaps midfielder Gershon Koffie.
Koffie, who was issued a yellow card after the foul, has been suspended a game and fined an undisclosed amount for his actions by the MLS Disciplinary Committee, the league announced Tuesday.
Rose will also be out of service for at least one game. Coach Sigi Schmid said the UCLA product will undergo another X-ray Thursday before he can be medically cleared.
“The earliest he’ll be cleared to train again is Friday,” Schmid said of Rose, “so he’s definitely out for this weekend. Hopefully he’ll be cleared on Thursday and then he’ll be able to participate again next week. But right now we have to wait.”
Rose has had a great rookie season with 17 MLS games played and nine starts. He scored his first goal earlier this month to cap a 4-0 home win against the Galaxy and also has been productive in the U.S. Open and CONCACAF Champions League.
