Osvaldo Alonso became a U.S. citizen about three months ago.
At about that same time we asked the star Sounders FC midfielder if a future with the U.S. men’s national team was possible since he had already played for Cuba in the 2007 CONCACAF Gold Cup.
Alonso said then that his agent was looking into the situation and sent an inquiry to FIFA to look into his eligibility.
I asked him today if there was any update.
“Not yet,” Alonso said. “My agent is still working. Maybe soon I’ll get a final response. I hope it’s going to be good for me. Just waiting.”
It’s no secret Sounders fans and U.S. Soccer fans alike are hoping it will be good news. Alonso said he’s equally excited.
“My agent is doing everything for that to happen,” he said.
