UPDATE 3:10 p.m. — Coach Sigi Schmid’s reaction added.
Sounders FC had a bye week in CONCACAF Champions League action as the two other teams in Group 4 kicked off. The result was a good one for Seattle.
CD Marathon of Honduras visited Trinidadian club Caledonia AIA and they played to a 0-0 tie.
“0-0 is OK for us,” said Sounders FC coach Sigi Schmid of the result when asked Friday. “For us, the big thing is if we can win our next two games, then we can hopefully make the third game meaningless. That’s where we’re at right now. … If we can win these next two, then there’s no way Caledonia or Marathon can catch us. So that’s our objective right now: Go down to Trinidad get the points and hopefully go down to Honduras and get the points, as well, and put ourselves in a situation where that last game on the last week of the season becomes a game that doesn’t matter for us to advance.”
The Sounders can eliminate Caledonia from advancement with a road win next Thursday at Ato Bolden Stadium in Couva, Trinidad. That would also put a load of pressure on Marathon in its remaining two games against Seattle.
Here’s how the group standings look (teams play four games total, home and away vs. each opponent):
Sounders FC: 1-0-0, 3 points
CD Marathon: 0-0-1, 1 point
Caledonia AIA: 0-1-1, 1 point
