Fredy Montero joins Sounders FC’s hat-trick club in big win over Chivas USA

montero mug 2012.jpgFor the first time in Sounders FC’s young history, two players have recorded a hat trick in the same season.

Forward Fredy Montero achieved the feat, his first in MLS, Saturday in a 6-2 road win against Chivas USA. Teammate David Estrada had earlier this year in a opening-day win over Toronto FC.

Here’s the team’s hat-trick club after the addition of a new member:

Fredy Montero, Aug. 25, 2012, vs. Chivas USA

David Estrada, March 17, 2012, vs. Toronto

Lamar Neagle, Aug. 27, 2011, vs. Columbus

Blaise Nkufo, Sept. 18, 2010, vs. Columbus

With the three goals, Montero has tied Eddie Johnson for the team lead with 11 and now both on our pace to break the club record for goals in a season (12, set by Montero in 2009 and matched by him in 2011). The 25-year-old Colombian has reached double-digit goals in each of his four seasons here.

“He’s playing well,” coach Sigi Schmid said of Montero. “I think the one goal that he made where he played the ball to Mauro (Rosales), he got the ball back and just chipped it over (Chivas USA goalkeeper Dan) Kennedy as he was coming out, I thought that was a quality goal, a quality finish. He’s very sharp right now and very confident and obviously that’s a good thing for our team.”

Added Montero: “I’m just happy to keep it up. We know that it is not the end; we have nine more games where we have to make as many plays as we can. We have a really good team. We have players who are ready for the opportunity to come in and perform well.”
