Eidur Gudjohnsen, formerly of Chelsea FC and FC Barcelona, will join Sounders FC for a tryout this week, the team confirmed Tuesday. The Icelandic forward/midfielder is a free agent who most recently played for AEK Athens in Greece.
Even though the summer transfer window has closed, the Sounders could sign Gudjohnsen since he’s out of contract.
The MLS roster freeze is Sept. 15, so he’d have to be added before then.
Gudjohnsen, 33, has been to Seattle a couple times before. He scored for Chelsea in a 4-2 win here against Celtic FC of Scotland in 2004 and also played for Barcelona in a 4-0 win against the Sounders in 2009.
Trophies collected in his career include a UEFA Champions League title, two EPL titles, a La Liga title, a Dutch league title and several others.
I’ll have more on this one throughout the week. I wouldn’t be entirely surprised to see Gudjohnsen feature on Sunday’s MLS Reserve League game against Chivas USA.
