U.S. men lose World Cup qualifier in Jamaica

The U.S. men’s national team couldn’t have gotten off to a better start in Friday’s FIFA World Cup qualifier in Jamaica.

Clint Dempsey scored 36 seconds for an early lead, which was also the fastest goal in USMNT qualifying history. (In another interesting note, the goal tied Dempsey with Sounders FC’s Eddie Johnson for fourth-most in qualifying history with eight.) But alas the lead would not be held. The hosts got two goals off free kicks, the first by Rodolph Austin in the 23rd minute and the winner by Luton Shelton in the 62nd minute, to earn a 2-1 win.

The USMNT has never won a qualifier in Jamaica (0-1-4). On the other hand, the Reggae Boyz had never beaten the U.S. This same matchup will be played in another qualifier Tuesday in Columbus at a sold-out Crew Stadium.

Here’s the recap from U.S. Soccer, an AP recap and reaction from SI.com, MLSsoccer.com and ProSoccerTalk.

And here’s how things stand in CONCACAF’s Group A in qualifying:

1. Jamaica 2-0-1 (7 points, +2 GD, four goals scored)

2. USA 1-1-1 (4 points, +1 GD, five goals scored)

2. Guatemala 1-1-1 (4 points, +1 GD, five goals scored)

4. Antigua & Barbuda 0-2-1 (1 point, -4 GD, two goals scored)

What do you make of the result? Still confident the U.S. will advance to the final round of qualifying?
