My MLS power rankings — Week 27

San Jose Earthquakes Logo.jpg1. (1) San Jose Earthquakes 16-6-5

Became the first team to clinch a playoff berth as a result of Seattle’s win vs. Chivas last week.

2. (2) Sporting Kansas City 15-7-5

Ends the year with four of six on the road. That makes Friday’s home game vs. Houston a big one.

3. (3) Seattle Sounders FC 13-6-8

Can join S.J. in the playoff field this weekend with a win in Portland and help from the ‘Quakes.

4. (4) New York Red Bulls 13-7-7

Odd to see Kenny Cooper struggle to get time after scoring 11 goals in the first three months.

5. (5) Chicago Fire 13-8-5

When is the Fire vulnerable? From Minute 30 to Minute 45 with an MLS-most nine goals allowed.

6. (9) Houston Dynamo 12-7-9

Might well finish unbeaten at BBVA with three home games left: N.E., Montreal and Philly.

7. (7) Los Angeles Galaxy 13-11-4

No surprise that Beckham, Donovan and Keane are all in the top eight for MLS jersey sales.

8. (6) Real Salt Lake 14-11-4

Have lost four games at Rio Tinto this year. Lost just five total at home from 2008-2011.

9. (9) Columbus Crew 12-9-6

In just six games, Federico Higuain has six assists — twice as many as any Crew teammate.

10. (10) Montreal Impact 12-14-3

DP Marco Di Vaio has the longest active streak in MLS with goals in three straight games.

11. (11) FC Dallas 8-12-9

Would take a huge leap toward that fifth playoff spot in the West with a home win vs. Vancouver.

12. (12) D.C. United 12-10-5

Dwayne De Rosario scored while on int’l duty but also suffered a potentially concerning knee injury.

13. (13) Vancouver Whitecaps FC 10-11-7

Still in a playoff position despite a minus-8 goal differential, which is third worst in the West.

14. (14) Philadelphia 7-13-5

Not sure I would have guessed Roger Torres jersey sales would be higher than Freddy Adu’s.

15. (17) Colorado Rapids 9-17-2

Underachievement this season falls heavily on its woeful performance on the road (2-12-0).

16. (15) Chivas USA 7-12-7

Need good news? Well, at least the team has more goals now (21) than Chris Wondolowski (18).

17. (19) New England Revolution 7-14-7

At least there’s some excitement at Gillette Stadium coming up with the NFL’s return.

18. (16) Portland Timbers FC 7-14-6

Could clinch the 2012 Cascadia Cup with a home win against rival Seattle on Saturday.

19. (18) Toronto FC 5-16-6

Earned the dubious honor of being the first team mathematically eliminated from playoff contention.
