There was a high-profile visitor at Saturday’s rivalry game between the Sounders and Timbers:
The Cascadia Cup.
The shiny trophy would have changed hands with a Portland win but instead will head back to Seattle — the home of last year’s winner — as a result of the 1-1 tie at Jeld-Wen Field.
“That was important,” midfielder Steve Zakuani said. “We didn’t want our fans to drive down on a bus carrying a trophy and go back empty-handed.”
Here’s how the standings look:
Portland: 2-0-2 (8 points)
Seattle: 1-1-2 (5 points)
Vancouver: 0-2-2 (2 points)
Each team has two games remaining, in order: Vancouver hosts Seattle on Sept. 29, Seattle hosts Portland on Oct. 7, and Vancouver hosts Portland on Oct. 21.
Any thoughts on how things are shaping up in the competition?
