David Estrada returns as Sounders reserves lose, 3-2, in Portland

estrada mug 2012.jpgThe Sounders relied heavily on academy players to fill out a lineup for Sunday’s MLS Reserve League game in Portland, but the big story in the 3-2 loss was the return of David Estrada.

Seattle’s breakout forward/midfielder had been out for three months with a broken left foot.

Estrada, who still ranks third on the team with five MLS goals, played the second half as the Sounders came back to make things interesting after conceding thrice before halftime. His last game action had come in a June 5 game against Cal FC in the U.S. Open Cup.

In front of 8,968 fans at Jeld-Wen Field, the Timbers got goals from Mike Fucito (an ex-Sounder), Brent Richards (a former UW standout) and Kris Boyd (perhaps the highest-paid reserve in the league). Seattle responded with goals from academy members Jordan Morris and Isidro Prado-Huerta.

Portland’s reserves finished the season 4-5-1. The Sounders reserves are 3-5-1 and play their last game next Sunday, a 2 p.m. home game against San Jose at Starfire.
