MLS going pink (Monday links)

pink ball.jpgOctober is here and that means MLS will be kicking off Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

As part of a leaguewide campaign, each team will have a home game to raise awareness and money for cancer research and treatment. Sounders FC’s is Oct. 21 against FC Dallas.

Here are some more details from a league release:

Collaborating with MLS partners adidas and Gatorade, matches will be played with a commemorative pink adidas PRIME match ball and players will use pink sideline towels provided by Gatorade. MLS corporate and broadcast partners will also support the campaign with field board recognition during select matches.

MLS players and referees will wear a special pink MLS W.O.R.K.S. ribbon patch on their jerseys, pink adidas sweat bands, pink shoelaces and several goalkeepers will use pink gloves to further support the cause.

Let’s get to some links:

Here’s another report linking the Sounders to Honduran talent. To be honest, the internet translation makes it hard for me to really understand what that’s one about.

— Did you see former Sounders designated player Alvaro Fernandez has been called up by Uruguay for FIFA World Cup qualifying?

— Did you see the NBA will start punishing flopping (much like MLS)?

— Around the league, here’s a look at chances Freddy Adu has created for the Union, even if his assist total isn’t spectacular. Regarding some stadium situations, here’s a report on a potential new home for the Revolution, here’s one on some concerns regarding a new stadium in New York, and here’s another on a stadium possibility in Orlando.

— Sounds like something crazy could be going on at halftime of Sunday’s game vs. Portland.

— In the community, there is some Seattle representation on Team USA’s Homeless World Cup team and here’s a feature on local club team Deportivo Italia.

— Lastly, there are some goals you have to see. There was a controversial winner in the Columbus-Philly game that had playoff implications, here’s a phenomenal Jozy Altidore run and finish, and then a tremendous strike from Italy.
