International gameday (Friday links)

fifa logo.jpgIt might be a quiet weekend in MLS, but today kicks off a huge slate of international games. Here’s a list of all the FIFA World Cup qualifiers going on, and here are the particularly relevant ones for Sounders FC fans.

Sweden at Faroe Islands, 9 a.m. (Adam Johansson, updates here)

USA at Antigua & Barbuda, 4 p.m. (Eddie Johnson)

Honduras at Panama, 7:05 p.m. (Mario Martinez)

In some last USMNT preview coverage, here’s a look at injuries going in from ESPN.com and FOX Sports. Also, The Sporting News wonders, ‘What if the U.S. doesn’t qualify?’

And in the other group game, apparently U.S. fans want to root for Jamaica to beat Guatemala.

Let’s get to some links:

* * *

— The Sounders may get grief from other fan bases for this, but tickets for the Real Salt Lake game are available on Groupon.

— It’s now official: NBC Sports Network will carry the Ross Fletcher/Kasey Keller broadcast of that Oct. 17 game vs. RSL to a national audience. The game will still be available on KONG locally and ROOT in the region.

— Here’s more from the Leaders in Football conference in England, where Arsenal CEO Ivan Gazidis says other leagues would do well to follow the MLS model, and commissioner Don Garber talks about the league’s interest in Clint Dempsey and Frank Lampard.

— Here’s a site that judges all the MLS venues. Find out where CenturyLink Field ranks.

— Did you see Hans Backe has said he won’t be coming back to coach the New York Red Bulls next season (not like it’s a huge surprise in this point)?

— Here’s another story on Eddie Johnson, who’s call-up inspired this piece on what other USMNT veterans are ready for a return to action.

— It sounds like the Timbers Army had some issues with CenturyLink Field security on Sunday. Here’s hoping that gets sorted out and doesn’t become a trend.

— Lastly, Sounders FC coach Sigi Schmid was on KJR radio yesterday…
