Cascadia Cup to be settled this weekend

cascadia cup.jpgThe Sounders (and fans) will be doing some scoreboard watching before Sunday’s game.

The interest will be on the final Cascadia Cup match of the 2012 season, as Vancouver hosts Portland at 4 p.m. — two hours before the Seattle-FC Dallas game. The Timbers must beat the Whitecaps to earn the trophy; anything else would result in the Cup staying with Sounders fans.

Here are the current Cascadia Cup standings

Seattle Sounders FC: 2-1-3 (nine points)

Portland Timbers: 2-1-2 (eight points)

Vancouver Whitecaps: 0-2-3 (three points)

Here’s a quick breakdown of the tiebreakers in case Portland and Seattle each finish with 2-1-3 records. Since the three-game series was tied head-to-head (1-1-1), that means head-to-head goal differential would settle things, and the Sounders boast a plus-2 advantage against the Timbers courtesy of a recent 3-0 win.

Once again, that means Portland must beat the Whitecaps on Sunday.

If that ends up happening, it would mark the first time the Timbers won the trophy when all three teams were competing in the same league. It would also salvage something from a failed season, which might look even worse if both Northwest rivals make the playoffs.

What do you think? Almost as much interest in the Vancouver-Portland game as the Sounders-FC Dallas game this weekend?
