Sounders can clinch the No. 2 seed in the Western Conference with a win or tie Sunday

MLS Logo.jpgPosted below is a look at the Western Conference standings after Saturday’s games.

By virtue of Real Salt Lake’s 0-0 tie against Vancouver, the Sounders can officially clinch the No. 2 seed in the playoffs with a win or tie in Sunday night’s regular-season finale at the Los Angeles Galaxy.

A tie works since Seattle’s holds the first tiebreaker in goals scored — 51 to 46 — and the No. 2 seed would give the Sounders home-field advantage in the second leg of the conference semifinals against RSL.

If you look at the standings in the East, you’ll also notice Seattle would finish with the third-best overall record in MLS with a win Sunday. That would be significant for a couple reasons.

First, it would mean the Sounders would host every Eastern Conference team in the MLS Cup except for Sporting Kansas City.

It also would mean the Sounders would earn a berth into the 2013-14 CONCACAF Champions League if either San Jose or Kansas City makes it to MLS Cup. Since the Earthquakes (Supporters’ Shield) and SKC (Open Cup) have already clinched two of the league’s four CCL berths, they can’t earn one of the berths awarded to the MLS Cup finalists.

Since Seattle would have the best record of non-qualified teams, the Sounders would automatically get that berth.
