Conference semifinals set (Friday links)

MLS Logo.jpgThe 2012 MLS Cup playoff field is down to eight teams following the Galaxy’s comeback win against Vancouver last night. Here’s how things look (more details here):

Western Conference semifinals

  • No. 1 San Jose Earthquakes vs. No. 4 LA Galaxy

  • No. 2. Real Salt Lake vs. No. 3. Seattle Sounders FC

Eastern Conference semifinals

  • No. 1 Sporting Kansas City vs. No. 5 Houston Dynamo

  • No. 2. D.C. United vs. No. 3 New York Red Bulls

Let’s get to some links…

* * *

— Lots of preview material out there today: The Sporting News takes a look at the Sounders FC-Real Salt Lake series, as does ProSoccerTalk and The Salt Lake Tribune. Here’s a Western Conference preview from Goal.com. ESPN.com takes a look at the West and the East.

Kasey Keller will be a busy guy in the playoffs. On top of Sounders broadcast duties, he’ll be in San Jose for the second leg of that conference semifinal on Nov. 7 as a part of ESPN’s coverage of the game.

— Looks like the league website had a lapse in judgment for some recent playoff advertising.

— Expect the draw for the final round of CONCACAF World Cup qualifying to be Wednesday. Also, here’s a transcript of a conference call with USMNT coach Jurgen Klinsmann, and here are some highlights.

— On the USWNT side, SI’s Grant Wahl had a chat with new coach Tom Sermanni, and FOX Sports caught up with Abby Wambach.

— Tucson is going to be a popular place for MLS teams next preseason, and Minnesota also got some good news on the soccer front.

— Sounds like an American national in Mexico, Jose Torres, could be changing teams.

— Lastly, Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson showed his support for the Sounders the other day. Looks like he’ll be at the game tonight, as well.
