USMNT earns tie in Russia (Wednesday links)

us logo small.jpgCourtesy of a dramatic equalizer in stoppage time by Mix Diskerud (video here), the U.S. men’s national team stole a 2-2 tie in a friendly against Russia early Wednesday morning. Michael Bradley also scored — his in spectacular fashion — as the USMNT finished with the federations’ best record for a calendar year at 9-2-3.

Here is some reaction from SI.com, MLSsoccer.com and ProSoccerTalk.

Also, it sounds like the U.S. will host Germany in a friendly on May 29.

Let’s get to some links:

* * *

— First off, the referee assignments are out for the second leg of the conference finals and Mark Geiger will be the man in charge at CenturyLink Field on Sunday. Worth noting, the Sounders have lost their last three games with Geiger as ref, including a 4-1 loss in Montreal this year and the 3-0 playoff loss at Real Salt Lake in 2011. Seattle wasn’t too pleased with the referee’s performance in the Impact game.

— Speaking of the refs, the general manager of their organization, PRO, has admitted that Houston’s Andre Hainault should have been sent off in a game-changing play missed by Ricardo Salazar in the first leg of the Eastern Conference final.

— In case you missed it, here’s our story on the Hope SoloJerramy Stevens happenings from yesterday.

— Domestic violence is also the allegation surrounding FC Dallas president Doug Quinn.

— Elsewhere around the league, Kaka says he wants to play in New York one day, here’s the recap of a Chivas USA press conference Tuesday, and the league is looking at ways to reward regular-season performance amid a postseason that doesn’t appear to have done that.

— Some Sounders FC homegrown products have been doing well this college season. Postseason awards are starting to come out and DeAndre Yedlin and Sean Okoli were among those honored.

— Did you know the Sounders turned five years old yesterday?

— Lastly, the league website has video of a 1994 friendly between the USA and Russia played in front of 43,651 at the Kingdome. Local product Chris Henderson, now Sounders FC technical director, starred in the game. Alexi Lalas, like the U.S. did this morning, scored a late equalizer.
