Michael Gspurning, Eddie Johnson among finalists for MLS postseason awards

MLS Logo.jpgUPDATE 2:57 p.m. — I’ve included a response from coach Sigi Schmid on the nominations.

MLS announced the top-three finalists for postseason awards Thursday morning. The awards are voted on by teams, players and media — each makes up one third of the vote — and the finalists are listed in alphabetical order.

Sounders FC’s representatives are Michael Gspurning for Goalkeeper of the Year (which his coach thinks he deserves) and Newcomer of the Year. Eddie Johnson is in the top three for Comeback Player of the Year (an award he has already won and isn’t too excited about).

“It’s great,” said coach Sigi Schmid after Friday’s practice. “Obviously Eddie had a good season scoring a good amount of goals coming off where a lot of people had written him off, so that’s certainly a worthy nomination. And Gspurning, I’ve felt all along I think he’s goalkeeper of the year for me in the league, and obviously he’s a guy who’s a candidate for newcomer of the year. So I think those are very fair.”

Here is the full list, where I’m sure some of you will notice Ricardo Salazar was not a finalist for Referee of the Year:
