San Jose’s Frank Yallop wins MLS Coach of the Year, Seattle’s Sigi Schmid voted fifth

San Jose Earthquakes Logo.jpgIn a more predictable announcement, San Jose’s Frank Yallop has been named 2012 MLS Coach of the Year in a landslide. The Earthquakes, despite a disappointing playoff performance, ran away with the Supporters’ Shield after a 14th-place finish last season.

The team also came within two points of the single-season record set by the Los Angeles Galaxy in 1998 (68 points).

Yallop boasted huge margins in the club vote (74.14 percent), media vote (63.83) and player vote (58.06) for a 196.03 weighted total. Sporting Kansas City’s Peter Vermes finished a distant second with a 27.4 total.

D.C. United Ben Olsen was third (25.64), followed by Chicago’s Frank Klopas (14.68) and Sounders FC’s Sigi Schmid (5.73).

Schmid, a two-time winner of the award, earned 4.3 percent of the player vote and 1.43 from the media.
