Sounders FC’s Michael Gspurning finishes third in voting for top goalkeeper, newcomer

MLS Logo.jpgTwo more MLS postseason awards were announced Wednesday morning, and while Sounders FC’s Michael Gspurning was a finalist for both Goalkeeper of the Year and Newcomer of the Year, he ended up finishing third in both votes (though I imagine things might’ve been different had he not missed 13 games with a hip injury).

As expected, Sporting Kansas City’s Jimmy Nielsen‘s won Goalkeeper of the Year, which came on the heels of Monday’s Best XI announcement.

Nielsen, who led the league in shutouts (15) and wins (18), actually won in a landslide carrying the club vote (49.12 percent), the media vote (70.77) and the player vote (26.44) for a 146.33 weighted total. Chivas USA’s Dan Kennedy was runner up 30.30.

Gspurning was next at 28.38, followed by Real Salt Lake’s Nick Rimando (17.98) and Andy Gruenebaum of Columbus (17.34).

In the other award, Crew forward Federico Higuain edged San Jose defender Victor Bernardez for Newcomer of the Year.

Head to head, Bernardez led the club vote (18.97 to 17.24) and player vote (23.08 to 10.99) but Higuain, who had five goals and seven assists in 13 games, had a huge advantage in the media vote (30.77 to 9.23) to take the weight total by a 59.00-51.28 margin.

Gspurning was next with a 31.78 total. Next were Vancouver’s Young-Pyo Lee (25.80) and Houston’s Boniek Garcia (24.40).

This lists of previous winners are after the jump…
