Adrian Hanauer retained as Sounders FC general manager after fan vote

hanauer mug.jpgIn what was no surprise, it was announced at Sounders FC’s end-of-the-year business meeting Thursday night that Adrian Hanauer has been retained as general manager following a fan vote.

Total votes: 13,775. Retain votes: 13,271. Remove votes: 504. That’s 96.3 percent.

“Their voice has been heard,” majority owner Joe Roth said in a news release.

More than 85 percent of votes were cast before the end of the season.

Season-ticket holders and Alliance members were eligible to vote from Oct. 7 to Dec. 7, and Hanauer needed a simple majority to keep his position as GM. His ownership stake in the franchise was not in question.

It is believed to be the first vote of its kind in American professional sports. A minimum of 10,000 submitted ballots were required for the vote to be valid and the accounting firm Moss Adams LLP authenticated the results.

“The first four years have been remarkable,” Hanauer said in the release, “and I look forward to continuing the growth and progress over the next four years.”

Here is some background on the GM vote, a process every four years that was inspired by part owner Drew Carey and established in the early days of the club’s existence.
