David Estrada, Josh Ford to participate in “Soccer Night in Newtown” (Monday links)

estrada ford.jpgYou may or may not have heard about “Soccer Night in Newtown” by now.

It’s an event on Jan. 7 being put together by Houston Dynamo president Chris Canetti, a Connecticut native, in the aftermath of the shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary School earlier this month.

This story on MLSsoccer.com has more details, but a number of people in the soccer community have agreed to participate in a day for Newtown residents and members of the Newtown Youth Soccer Club, including Landon Donovan, Mia Hamm, Cobi Jones, Alexi Lalas, Kristine Lilly, Eric Wynalda and others.

According to the league website, Sounders FC’s David Estrada (the team’s Humanitarian of the Year) and Josh Ford (a UConn product) will be among the participants, many of which have Connecticut connections.

Looks like it will be a special day. Let’s get to some links:

* * *

— The Los Angeles Galaxy have acquired a recognizable name in former Chelsea and Tottenham goalkeeper Carlo Cudicini. The veteran was signed on a free transfer and apparently will not be a designated player.

— In other Spurs goalkeeper news, American legend Brad Friedel has signed a new deal with the club.

— And regarding another American abroad, here’s a Q&A with midfielder Michael Bradley.

— And in some Sounders news, here’s a interview (in Spanish) with midfielder Mario Martinez, here’s yet another report (in Spanish) on Honduran defender Wilmer Crisanto being in line to sign with Seattle, and here’s a story (in Spanish) that again mentions Millonarios of Colombia wanting Fredy Montero on loan but that the Sounders would want him back by April.

— I don’t think anyone is surprised to see Sounders crowds flood this list of 2012’s biggest soccer attendances in the U.S.

— Elsewhere, FIFA president Sepp Blatter didn’t have nice things to say about the development of MLS, and China is the latest rumored destination for David Beckham.

— Here’s a post that has gathered some of the best soccer writing from the past year.

— And lastly, SI’s Grant Wahl has some predictions for 2013.
