Eddie Johnson, Brad Evans called up by USMNT for January training camp

us logo small.jpgU.S. men’s national team coach Jurgen Klinsmann has called in 25 players for January camp starting Monday, and Sounders FC’s Eddie Johnson and Brad Evans were included in the roster.

Former Sounders defender Jeff Parke, who was traded to Philadelphia in the offseason, also received a call-up. Houston Dynamo goalkeeper Tally Hall, a Gig Harbor native, is another local connection on the roster.

The team will train in Carson, Calif., until Jan. 27, when it will head to Houston for a Jan. 29 friendly against Canada. That will be the only warmup game before the U.S. kicks off the final round of FIFA World Cup qualifying starts Feb. 6 at Honduras.

“There is a tremendous amount of talent in the player pool. We follow these players very carefully, and the group coming in is the next line to challenge the players ahead of them in the National Team,” said Klinsmann in a federation release. “This is absolutely a huge opportunity, and we’re looking forward to working with them. We are getting ready for the friendly against Canada, and also the big World Cup qualifier in Honduras, so these are going to be an important few weeks of preparation.”

Twenty-one of the 25 invited play in MLS. Johnson leads the roster in international appearances (44) and goals (14), coming off his successful return to the squad in World Cup qualifying at the end of last year. Evans and Parke were each called into January camp last year.
