Mario Martinez called up by Honduras for World Cup/Gold Cup qualifiers

martinez mug 2012.jpgSounders FC midfielder Mario Martinez has been called up by the Honduran national team for CONCACAF Gold Cup qualifiers this month and a FIFA World Cup qualifier against the U.S. on Feb. 6.

Martinez, 23, is a regular for his national team with 22 international appearances. He is the fourth Sounder to be called up in recent weeks joining Eddie Johnson and Brad Evans (U.S.) and Adam Johansson (Sweden).

Honduras will play in the Copa Centroamericana, a qualifying tournament in Costa Rica to participate in the 2013 Gold Cup this summer. The team is set to play El Salvador on Jan. 18 and Panama on Jan. 22, but more games might be required based on those results.

Martinez is expected to rejoin Sounders FC’s preseason after the World Cup qualifier in San Pedro Sula, Honduras.

Here’s the full squad announced Tuesday. You’ll notice it includes Wilmer Crisanto and Jose David Velasquez, who were once linked with a move to Seattle.
