A few notes regarding the 2013 schedule

MLS Logo.jpgThe 2013 MLS schedule has been released Wednesday morning, you can find Sounders FC’s here, and I wanted to pass along a few notes…

* * *

— Thirteen of Seattle’s 34 regular-season games will be on national television (eight on the NBC Sports Network, three on ESPN and two on ESPN2), including nine of last 11 games of the season and all three against rival Portland.

— Cascadia Cup games are always big ones and the Sounders host the Timbers on March 16/August 25 and Vancouver on June 8/October 9. Seattle, which lost the trophy last season, visits Portland on Oct. 13 and the Whitecaps on July 6.

— MLS says more than 90 percent of regular season games are on weekends or holidays and none will overlap directly with FIFA World Cup qualifiers (though the word “directly” is used a bit loosely there).

— Week 3 in MLS is being deemed “Rivalry Week”, with eight of nine games between regional rivals, including Seattle-Portland.

— The Sounders kick off March 2 at home against Montreal, marking the fifth-straight season opener at CenturyLink Field.

— Seattle received a bye in Week 2 to accommodate at CONCACAF Champions League quarterfinal against Mexico’s Tigres UANL on March 6 and 12. The CCL semifinals would be April 2-4 and 9-11; the finals are April 24 and May 1.

— Fourteen of the Sounders’ 17 home games will be played at night; nine home games are on Saturdays, with five on Sundays, two on Wednesdays and one on Friday.

— Seattle will travel twice three times to the Eastern Time Zone (Philadelphia on May 4, Toronto on Aug. 10, Columbus on Aug. 31) and an estimated total of 39,420 miles (1,800 fewer than 2012).

— The MLS Cup will be on Dec. 7 or 8, hosted again by the finalist with the best record. 2013 has the league’s earliest start ever (March 2) and also its latest finish.
