A brief history of Seattle’s designated players

Sounders FC has had six designated players in its four seasons in MLS. Here a quick look:

Freddie Ljungberg (signed Oct. 28, 2008 … traded to Chicago on July 30, 2010)

Blaise Nkufo (signed March 4, 2010 … arrived July 17, 2010 … bought out March 15, 2011)

Alvaro Fernandez (signed July 29, 2010 … traded to Chicago on July 27, 2012)

Fredy Montero (re-signed as DP on Dec. 1, 2010 … loaned to Millonarios on Jan. 21, 2012)

Mauro Rosales (re-signed Dec. 13, 2011 … classified as DP before 2012 season … active)

Christian Tiffert (signed July 27, 2012 … active)

* * *

Crazy coincidence that Montero was loaned to a Colombian team (Millonarios) four years to the day he signed with the Sounders on loan from a Colombian team (Deportivo Cali).

DP success has been varied so far, and the four exits have been pretty unceremonious — two were traded within the league to the Fire, one had his contract bought out before the season, and another was loaned back to the league from whence he came.

Though having just two of the three DP slots filled means Sounders fans can speculate as to whom will be the next to join the list. Remember, ownership has iterated many times recently (the team’s end-of-the-year press conference and business meeting) that it is willing to spend whatever necessary to bring in the right star to Seattle.

General manager Adrian Hanauer, in particular, has said the team would not move a DP unless it was able to sign another.

What would you like to see in the Sounders’ next DP?
