A first look at the preseason camp roster

Seattle Sounders FC Logo.jpgPosted below is a first look at Sounders FC’s roster for preseason training camp. Keep in mind, there will be tons of change over the next few weeks, including the addition of five rookies — barring any trades or passes — in Tuesday’s MLS Supplemental Draft.

You’ll notice 25 guys are under contract, 14 are trialists, one is an unsigned draft pick (Dylan Remick) and one is Cordell Cato in a situation that is yet to be resolved. The young Trinidadian, whose option wasn’t picked up after last year, is on the camp roster but wasn’t in action Monday. We’re expecting resolution soon in his case soon, perhaps a repeat of last year’s loan-type situation.

More trialists are sure to come and go, and some of the current group probably won’t fly to Arizona next week. Others might join in progress.

Coach Sigi Schmid was asked if any invitees have impressed so far.

“Yeah, a couple look good,” he said, declining to specify who in particular.

In other notes, Schmid praised the passing and poise on the ball of rookie Eriq Zavaleta, who practiced mostly as a center back Monday. Andrew Duran (ACL tear) is the only one affected by injury as he hasn’t received full clearance yet, though he feels good and has been progressing well.

Lastly, Schmid broke down his schedule for the next few days:

“I’ve always been a coach that when we start practicing, I don’t believe in going crazy the first four or five days,” he said. “I think that’s when a lot of injuries happen because players are anxious and eager and enthusiastic. … It’s to play a little bit bigger. We split them into two groups so we could see people. We had our guys do a little bit of running, building up the fitness on that stage, and there will be more of that this week. We’ll weight train, as well, on Wednesday. We’ll get a chance and we’ll play a little bit of 11-v-11, mainly with the trialists and some of our guys involved, as well. And we’ll do our testing at the end of the week at VMAC, so that’s our plan. It’s a one-day-a-week type of thing. When we got to Casa Grande next week that’s when we really go into fitness and go into (two a days) and really push that aspect.”
