Sounders open preseason training camp with no surprises, 14 invitees listed

01212013.jpgEveryone expected to be in action for the start of Sounders FC’s preseason training camp was accounted for Monday at the Starfire Sports Complex.

Seattle’s four national-team players players were not there — Eddie Johnson (USA), Brad Evans (USA), Mario Martinez (Honduras), Adam Johansson (Sweden) — but we knew that going in.

One note, we didn’t exactly know the future of backup defender Daniel Steres, but it appears his option was declined at the end of last season as he wasn’t around.

What many people will want to know is what non-contract players were invited. Well, here’s a list of 14 provided by the team (there might have been more that weren’t listed; we’ll work through the trialists as we go through preseason):

GK Doug Herrick, Seattle native, played for the U-23s last year

M Manuel Asprilla, Panamian, formerly of Tigres UANL on loan from Tauro FC

M Philip Lund, Danish, formerly of Velje Boldklub

M Guy Essame, Cameroonian, formerly of Terek Grozny (Russia)

F Travis Bowen, formerly of Ventury County Fusion (PDL)

M Jonas Rasmussen, formerly of Nordsjaelland

M Ross LaBauex, formerly of the Colorado Rapids

M Marvin Angulo, Costa Rican, formerly of Herediano

F Jose Cuevas, formerly of the Charleston Battery (USL-1)

D Justin Davis, formerly of the Minnesota Stars (NASL)

D Cody Ellison, formerly of the Charleston Battery (USL-1)

M Blair Gavin, M, formerly of the New England Revolution

F David Opoku, from Ghana, played at UC Santa Barbara

D/M Isaiah Schafer, from Mars Hill College

In a couple notes, Cordell Cato isn’t listed as a trialist but is on the camp roster. He wasn’t at training Monday and we’re told there should be resolution on his status in the coming days.

Defender Andrew Duran was the only player limited due to injury as he continues to work back from the ACL tear. He’s cleared to play as a neutral and he still has some strengthening to do.

Guys like Babayele Sodade (ACL tear) and Patrick Ianni (calf) were limited at the end of last year but looked fine.
