Trialists, Alonso, Ford impress in speed test

01262013.jpgSounders FC held its annual speed test Saturday, a day after the team’s regular endurance test.

Here were the top five finishers in the 30-meter dash:

1. Isaiah Schafer – 3.95 (trialist)

2. Ashani Fairclough – 3.99 (trialist)

3. Osvaldo Alonso – 4.01 (Honey Badger)

4. DeAndre Yedlin – 4.02 (homegrown player)

5. Jennings Rex – 4.03 (supplemental draft pick)

The next fastest returning players were goalkeeper Josh Ford (4.10) and defender Andrew Duran (4.11, even while he’s still in the final stages of recovery from ACL surgery).

The most impressive note of the day might be that Ford was actually the fastest Sounder over the first 10 meters.

The least impressive? Well, that was probably Kurt Schmid, assistant coach and scout, taking a spill during his effort.

There was one potentially scary note Saturday, as well, as I spotted defender Patrick Ianni on crutches. From what I saw, he looked to keeping weight of his right foot/ankle. There was no official word from the team on any injury yet.

It also doesn’t sound like there will be a Community Shield game this preseason (the Desert Diamond Cup (Feb. 13-23) makes the schedule too tight before the March 2 opener.

The Sounders are trying to arrange a friendly against a Mexican or Honduran team as CONCACAF Champions League preparation. That game would be in Arizona.

Also, no official comment on the leaked jersey. The team is actually less involved in that business than you might think.
