Patrick Ianni could miss the start of the season with a foot fracture

An MRI Monday revealed defender Patrick Ianni has a slight fracture in his right foot, which will force him to miss four to six weeks. That means the projected starter, at least based upon the current roster, could miss the beginning of the season.

Seattle’s MLS opener is March 2 at home against Montreal.

So how does the team react?

“We go on,” coach Sigi Schmid said. “It’s like I said, I think we have some internal options obviously to look at, in terms of players who can play there. If something looks right (regarding a signing), we won’t ignore it, but certainly it’s something that we have to look at the long haul. We can’t just focus on what’s going to happen at the beginning at the season or what’s going to happen in our first series of games. We want to make sure the team is right for the long haul and the team is right at the end of the season. You can’t do something that maybe solves an immediate problem and creates a longer term problem.”

Ianni suffered the injury during a jump test Saturday. He has been on crutches the past few days with a protective boot on his right foot.

Schmid mentioned Monday that Zach Scott would be next on the depth chart. Rookie Eriq Zavaleta and perhaps trialist Ashani Fairclough follow.
