Honduras on top after wild day of World Cup qualifying in CONCACAF

concacaf logo.jpgWhew! What a day!

The final six CONCACAF teams in World Cup qualifying — USA, Mexico, Honduras, Costa Rica, Panama, Jamaica — played their first games in the Hexagonal on Wednesday.

All these teams will play home and away in a 10-game round robin and the top three in the end qualify automatically for the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil. The fourth-place team ties advances to a tiebreaker against the winner of the Oceania region (likely New Zealand).

We knew from earlier that the U.S. lost, 2-1, in Honduras, but that was just the start of a wild day. Elsewhere, Costa Rica came back from being two goals down on the road to earn a 2-2 tie at Panama.

Lastly, Jamaica went to Estadio Azteca and came out with an astonishing 0-0 tie (and had it’s chance to steal all three points).

The next round of games is March 22 and here’s how things look after Day 1:

* * *

1. Honduras (1-0), 3 points — next vs. Mexico

2. Costa Rica (0-0-1), 1 point — next at USA

3. Panama (0-0-1), 1 point — next at Jamaica

T-4. Jamaica (0-0-1), 1 point — next vs. Panama

T-4. Mexico (0-0-1), 1 point — next at Honduras

6. USA (0-1-0), 0 points — next vs. Costa Rica

NOTE: For these purposes, Costa Rica is ranked ahead of the three other teams on one point due to having two away goals. Panama is ranked ahead of the two other teams on one point due to having two goals scored. No tiebreaker technically separates Jamaica and Mexico, but we’ll go with the Reggae Boyz after earning a tough road point.
