Sounders FC

Daily coverage of Seattle Sounders FC, MLS and world soccer.

February 8, 2013 at 8:12 AM

Back at it (Friday links)

Seattle Sounders FC Logo.jpgThe Sounders return to training this morning. They’ll also practice here tomorrow before heading out to Tucson, Ariz., on Monday for the Desert Diamond Cup and other preseason preparation.

We’ll see how many of the national team guys made it in, but I expect all four — Eddie Johnson, Brad Evans, Mario Martinez, Adam Johansson — should be back today or tomorrow.

A few trialists joined the team in Arizona, so we’ll see is Mason Trafford, Djimi Traore, Shavar Thomas and Leo Lelis are still around. We’ll also see if the guys who were out sick have improved.

I’ll try to updated an updated camp roster later today.

Let’s get to some links:

* * *

— First off, Jon Billings has been promoted to executive director of the Sounders Women and Sounders FC U-23. He’ll maintain his role as director of communications; added responsibilities include financial and business operations, sales and marketing, sponsorship and other administrative duties.

— Speaking of the Sounders U-23s, they’ll play preseason friendlies at Bellingham United FC (April 24) and Seattle University (May 1).

— Sounder at Heart and Golazo will be hosting a viewing party for the March 6 CONCACAF Champions League game at Tigres UANL.

— MLS All-Star Game tickets are now on sale. The game will be in Kansas City on July 31.

— Regarding the USMNT, FOX Sports wonders if the U.S. Soccer revolution will ever arrive. The Sporting News take a more optimistic look, noting the struggles the 2002 World Cup team had in qualifying.

— Also, right back Steve Cherundolo underwent knee surgery recently, midfielder Sacha Kljestan announced he has signed a new deal with Anderlecht, and here’s a recent SI profile on Herculez Gomez, a former lower-leagues Sounder.

— Elsewhere, the Montreal Impact have signed forward Andres Fabricio Romero on loan, the Red Bulls have signed 20-year-old midfielder Ruben Izquierdo, the Columbus Crew signed midfielder Matias Sanchez, and the New York Cosmos named Carlos Llamosa an assistant coach.

— Beitar Jerusalem has been in the headlines again; this time is offices were burned in a suspected arson.

— Lastly, sporting director Chris Henderson might have some explaining to do after this video was taken out of the vault by Sporting Kansas City…
