Cordell Cato in training camp with San Jose (Sunday links)

Credit Sounder at Heart for a great catch last night, spotting Cordell Cato in a Earthquakes uniform during San Jose’s preseason game against Chicago.

A ‘Quakes spokesperson then confirmed that Cato, whose MLS rights are controlled by the Sounders, is a guest player and that the two teams are discussing a possible deal.

Cato has history with San Jose. He reportedly had an “extended audition” with the club in 2011. He also scored a big goal against the Earthquakes in the U.S. Open Cup last year, and Seattle coach Sigi Schmid even mentioned after that game that San Jose had been after Cato in the past.

Seems like it could be a good fit. Let’s get to some links:

— SaH also noticed that former Sounders defender Daniel Steres is in camp with Chicago. I do not believe Seattle still holds his rights, but I’m not entirely sure.

— Also involving San Jose, Feb. 26 is the target date to begin construction on a new stadium.

— The U.S. women’s national team beat Scotland, 4-1, on Saturday, and there was a breakout star in the game in Christen Press (two goals in her USWNT debut).

ProSoccerTalk has noticed that American goalkeeper Brad Guzan has had a pretty good year at Aston Villa.

— Here’s video of this go-ahead goal by American midfielder DaMarcus Beasley for Puebla.

Cristiano Ronaldo scored a hat trick over the weekend to add just that little bit more excitement heading into Real Madrid’s midweek UEFA Champions League game coming up against Manchester United.
