UPDATE 2:01 p.m. — Martins scored the lone goal for Levante in a 1-0 win this afternoon against Olympiacos in UEFA Europe League action. The Spanish won the series, 4-0 on aggregate, to advance into the Round of 16. Martins had two goals in the two games and has nine goals in 20 games in all competitions this season.

I’ve posted an interesting tweet above from Obafemi Martins‘ account the other day.
At least, there’s strong reason to believe it’s his account, even if not verified. Here’s a Goal.com story on the Nigerian forward joining Twitter with that exact handle (“oba_martins”) and Martins’ club team, Levante UD, follows that account.
If it is him, a cheeky comment and winky face in response to a Sounders fans’ message is perhaps worth noting. The team here has made no secret it’s been hunting for a DP forward, and Martins — who has played for teams like Inter Milan and Newcastle — would appear to fit that bill.
This all comes on the heels of a report from Steven Goff of The Washington Post, who had heard the Sounders could be after Martins.
Most recently, here’s a report from Nigeria saying a source within the Sounders confirmed the team is “taking a move for Martins very seriously.”
Levante is set to play Olympiacos in the second leg of UEFA Europa League Round of 32 matchup this afternoon. The Spanish club holds a 3-0 series lead, boosted — in fact — by a Martins goal.
According to this site, Martins’ contract runs through 2014, meaning the Sounders would likely be after him on a transfer before then. Maybe as soon as possible.
Some teams in Spain are having serious financial issues, which could be a motivating factor on the other end.
Lastly, here a quote from Sounders GM Adrian Hanauer from Tuesday if you missed it or need a reminder: “I’d be lying if I said we’re not also very interested in acquiring another forward. And I’d be lying if I said that wasn’t a player who could potentially fill that designated player role or position, of which we’ve got three right now. So that kind of gives you a heads up that we are considering all of our options over the next couple of weeks.”
As of now, the Sounders have no official comment on the reports.
