Sounders FC provided more indications Thursday that designated player Christian Tiffert could be on his way out before the start of the season.
In an interview with ExtraTime Radio, coach Sigi Schmid said: “Obviously Christian is not in camp right now and that’s a situation that’s in a process right now. It’s something I know that (general manager Adrian Hanauer) is dealing with and something that hopefully will get resolved in a short period of time.”
Hanauer had given multiple indications on a conference call Tuesday that a DP could be bought out before the March 2 deadline. The team has repeatedly expressed interest in bringing in a high-profile forward, and recent rumors have centered on Obafemi Martins.
Certainly Tiffert’s exit now is looking more and more like a formality.
Schmid talked about several other topics with the guys at ExtraTime Radio, including the acquisition of Shalrie Joseph, the development of Mario Martinez, the two games coming up and even the Harlem Shake video.
A couple other notes from the interview were that Joseph will need time to get fit but can partner with Osvaldo Alonso in midfield. Martinez will be a “very, very vital” player for the team this season. And no deals with Portland (re: the rights to Mikael Silvestre) are ever easy, but they didn’t hold the Timbers ransom.
