This week’s additions to the camp roster: Shalrie Joseph, Stephen Okai

UPDATE 12:38 a.m. — Rookie midfielder Stephen Okai joined Sounders FC’s preseason training camp Tuesday night. He had been with Philadelphia after being was drafted by the Union in the second round of the 2013 MLS SuperDraft. Highlights here.

“He was a guy that we liked at our combine,” coach Sigi Schmid told reporters after Wednesday’s preseason game. “We figured we still had some days here, we’re going to need some numbers to make our game work on Saturday, so we wanted to bring him in and take a look at him and see whether what we saw at our combine is still something that he has as he steps up and plays against MLS competition.”

Here are some other roster notes in addition to Tuesday’s trade acquisition of Shalrie Joseph

  • There have been strong indications that Djimi Traore and Dylan Remick will be earning contracts. That would give the Sounders 29 signed players, if my math is right.
  • There have also been strong indications, however, that a player (likely a DP) could have his contract bought out before the start of the season. Christian Tiffert appears to be that guy, having been MIA the past couple weeks as he recovers from an undisclosed injury away from the team.
  • Rumored DP targets, perhaps for a summer signing, have been Javier Saviola (reports from Argentina) and Obafemi Martins (a report from The Washington Post). GM Adrian Hanauer commented on the Saviola rumors here.
  • Cordell Cato remains in camp with San Jose, and the Sounders could be due compensation if the Earthquakes intend to acquire him.
