UPDATE 7:40 p.m. (Sat.) — Sounders FC has won the preseason tournament with a 1-0 win Saturday against Real Salt Lake. Alex Caskey scored the winner, his second in the DDC, and Marcus Hahnemann was spectacular in goal. The real action starts in a week when Seattle hosts Montreal in the MLS opener.

Final stats: Shots–RSL 15-10. Saves–SEA 7-4. Fouls–SEA 9-7. Corner kicks–RSL 7-4. Offsides–SEA 4-1.

UPDATE 8:25 p.m. (Wed.) — The Sounders beat New York, 2-0, and Real Salt Lake came back to beat New England, 3-2. That means Seattle and RSL will face off in Saturday’s 5 p.m. championship game, which will be broadcast on the NBC Sports Network. The Red Bulls and Revs play for third place at 3 p.m.

UPDATE 11:50 p.m. (Sat.) — Here’s how things stand Saturday after Seattle’s 2-1 win over Real Salt Lake and New England 3-1 win over New York. The Sounders have clinched a berth in the Feb. 23 final.

Sounders FC (2-0-0): 6 pts.
New England (1-1-0): 3 pts.
Real Salt Lake (0-1-1): 1 pt.
New York (0-1-1): 1 pt.

UPDATE 8:32 p.m. (Wed.) — Sounders FC leads the tournament after Day 1. As we know from earlier this evening, Seattle beat New England, 2-0. In a result that just went final, Real Salt Lake and New York played to a 2-2 tie.

It’s Desert Diamond Cup time!

The teams: Sounders FC, New England, Real Salt Lake, New York.

The venue: Kino Veterans Memorial Stadium (Tucson, Ariz.).

Ticket information: Available here.

This is the third annual Desert Diamond Cup, hosted by FC Tucson. The teams will play a round robin through the first three games with a championship game on Feb. 23.

Oddly enough, the Sounders actually wouldn’t field their starters in the final. No, Seattle’s top lineup is more likely to feature in a Feb. 22 friendly against Veracruz of the Mexican second division to better prepare for a CONCACAF Champions League quarterfinal against Mexico’s Tigres UANL.

This is the Sounders first involvement in the Desert Diamond Cup (the three other teams this year have). Previous preseason tournaments for Seattle include the 2010 La Manga Cup in Spain and the 2011 Cascadia Summit at Starfire.

Here are some notes from New England and New York.
