Back home, back to work (Monday links)

The Sounders return to the practice at their home training ground this morning in the final days leading into opening weekend. The team’s fifth season kicks off at 7:30 p.m. Saturday against Montreal at CenturyLink Field.

There will be another events to note this week: Seattle will unveil new uniforms Wednesday night and host fans in a kickoff luncheon on Thursday.

Look for more notes from practice throughout the day on my Twitter account, and then here on the blog this afternoon.

Let’s get to some links:

*     *     *

— First off, there’s been a change to Sounders FC’s 2013 schedule: Seattle’s Oct. 19 road game at FC Dallas will kick off at noon PT (it had been a 1 p.m. start). Updated schedule here.

— Some folks at MLSsoccer.com picked Eddie Johnson to win the Golden Boot. Agree?

— It looks like more sections of CenturyLink Field have opened up for a March 12 CCL game against Tigres UANL. I’ll try to get a formal ticket update.

— Around the league, Toronto DP Torsten Frings announced his retirement this morning, D.C. United has signed Marcos Sanchez on loan from Panama’s Tauro FC, and here’s a national voice that has a high opinion of the Sounders. Check out this list of top right midfielders in the league to see where Mauro Rosales was ranked by one writer.

— Have you seen Colorado’s new alternate jersey? It’s getting a lot of good reviews.

Here is a story on the upcoming Sons of Ben documentary in Philadelphia. You can check out a trailer for the film (something we’ve linked to before) here.

— The New York Times had this print piece on Kei Kamara at Norwich City and this blog post on Houston’s new star Oscar Boniek Garcia.

— Here are some potential stadium updates in Orlando and New York (though an MLS official has downplayed the reports regarding the plans for the stadium in Queens).

— Here is another look at the league’s discovery process.

— About 5,000 season-ticket holders for Portland Thorns FC. Not bad.

Clint Dempsey will be out a couple weeks with a calf strain, meaning he should be OK for next month’s World Cup qualifiers.

— Remember that the battle for the Cascadia Cup trademark rights is still ongoing.

— You should check out this piece on Diego Maradona.

— Here’s another report on Javier Saviola appearing set to head back to River Plate, and here’s a note from another writer than Nelson Valdez (another reported target of the Sounders) has signed a new deal with Valencia.

— Lastly, there has been some controversy in the past regarding Obafemi Martins‘ age. Here’s a piece on the subject out of Nigeria involving the forward the Sounders are chasing.
