A look at Sounders FC’s roster following the league’s compliance day

Seattle Sounders FC LogoOpening day in MLS also marks the deadline for teams to be compliant with roster rules and the salary cap.

Sounders FC seemingly wasn’t at risk but did announce a major move — albeit an expected one — in the buyout of designated player Christian Tiffert. Another ongoing storyline in preseason was resolved since our last roster update as Cordell Cato was traded to San Jose for a fourth-round supplemental draft pick in 2014.

There hasn’t been any official update on Babayele Sodade, but there have been multiple indications he won’t be a part of the squad going forward (beyond his tweets, none more obvious than Djimi Traore getting his No. 19 jersey).

Regarding the non-contract guys, I did see them up in the press box during Saturday’s game. There are a few roster spots open for one or two, it appears. And that’s even if the Obafemi Martins signing goes through, if it ever does. Coach Sigi Schmid had given strong praise recently for the work of trialists Ashani Fairclough and Travis Bowen, who don’t necessarily have to be signed by a certain deadline before the roster freeze in September.
