Sounders hit the CCL road (Monday links)

After a day off Sunday, the Sounders have begun their journey to Monterrey, Mexico, for Wednesday’s first leg of a CONCACAF Champions League quarterfinal against Tigres UANL (the top team in Liga MX).

Seattle will break up the journey by heading to Dallas first, as has become custom in those international trips in CCL.

More updates to come in the buildup to the series, but let’s get to some links:

*     *     *

— The Obafemi Martins saga continues to play out (and apparently he picked up a minor ankle injury in practice Monday). From what I can tell according to reports, he still wants to come to Seattle (even told the club president as much), the Sounders still want him, and Levante still doesn’t want to let him go. One recent story said the Spanish side wants to delay a move until June. Remember, Seattle GM Adrian Hanauer indicated in a radio interview with KJR-AM recently Levante officials aren’t exactly playing nice in this whole thing. And Martins told the BBC recently he still expected the deal to get done.

— In another international report, here’s a long interview in German with goalkeeper Michael Gspurning.

— I think we had a pretty cool blog post elsewhere on our website recently that shows how much the area loves the Sounders with some numbers.

— Interesting news around MLS, as stadium naming rights to The Home Depot Center will be going to StubHub later this year.

— Elsewhere around the league, it looks like Vancouver’s Jay DeMerit got some bad injury news, Portland owner Merritt Paulson doesn’t want 2013 to be all about him, and Freddy Adu issued a statement to ESPN about his situation.

Highlights from all the action from opening weekend is available on the league website, of course.

— The U.S. U-20s took Mexico to extra time in the CONCACAF Championships, but couldn’t quite get the win. They still qualified for the U-20 World Cup.

— Here’s more info on the great “Rise Above” tifo from the ECS on Saturday.

— Did you see Jozy Altidore has scored more goals in Europe this season than any American ever has? He broke Clint Dempsey‘s mark with No. 24 over the weekend.

The Equalizer has the news on the U.S. women’s national team players still being without a collective bargaining agreement going into the NWSL season.

— Lastly, Grant Wahl‘s latest video report for FOX Soccer
