Sigi Schmid on the possible Obafemi Martins signing: ‘I think the crowd will enjoy him.’

And now some thoughts from Sounders FC coach Sigi Schmid on the possible Obafemi Martins signing…

*     *     *

(Is there any update you can give on Obafemi Martins?) “Don’t know. There’s a lot of things that get tweeted in this world, so you don’t know for sure. Once it’s signed, sealed, delivered and I see a smiling face here, then I’ll know for sure.”

(Would there be a lag time between when he signs and when he might be available?) “Well there are always the P-1 work-permit issues, and you’ve got to get the transfer document in and the registration, so all that has to happen.”

(If signed, sealed and delivered, what would a player like that mean?) “Obviously when you’re trying to add a designated player, you expect him to help your team. He’s a player who’s been able to score goals in some of the toughest leagues in the world, so now if he can bring that talent here — he’s fast, he’s left-footed, he’s got some explosion to him — I think the crowd will enjoy him.”

(How do you handle a player that’s been playing since last August and could potentially have to play into December?) “Yeah, we’ve done that before. We’ve dealt with players who have come through those sorts of situations before and it’s just a matter of the game time being appropriate, recognizing when they’re starting to fatigue a little bit, and just giving time off sometimes when it’s appropriate. Not everybody needs time off at the same time, but sometimes certain guys need a little spell or need a little break here and there.”
