Another look at Sounders FC’s roster following the signing of Obafemi Martins

Seattle Sounders FC LogoThere have been a few roster developments since our latest update. Here are a few notes:

— The big news was the signing of forward Obafemi Martins, who gives the Sounders a full complement of three (Mauro Rosales, Shalrie Joseph).

— Martins also takes up an international roster slot, of which Seattle has filled five of seven available (as far as I understand): Martins, Adam Johansson, Mario Martinez, Andy Rose, Djimi Traore.

— The Sounders are up to 28 under contract. Two spots remain open and some of those decisions could be made soon, according to coach Sigi Schmid. The two top options appear to be trialists Ashani Fairclough and Philip Lund, who have been with the team for most (Fairclough) is not all (Lund) the season since the start of camp.

— Other non-contract guys still in camp are goalkeeper Doug Herrick (back from national team duty with Guam, formerly of the U-23s) and Will Bates (a supplemental draft pick recovering from knee surgery).

— The expected release of Babayele Sodade was made official a while back.

— Non-contract guys like Stephen Okai and Travis Bowen are no longer with the team. Schmid said Bowen might be close to signing with a PDL team, and the Sounders will keep tabs on him.

— Guys on national team duty this coming week are Martins (Nigeria), forward Eddie Johnson (USA) and Martinez (Honduras), according to Schmid. Midfielder Brad Evans (USA) is on a standby list and dealing with a calf strain. Johansson, who is a semi-regular for Sweden, is recovering from a knee injury.
