Sounders FC nominated again for SBJ’s Team of the Year (Tuesday links)

Sounders FC is one of four Team of the Year nominees for the 2013 Sports Business Awards, by the SportsBusiness Journal and SportsBusiness Daily.

The other finalists are…

Oklahoma City Thunder (NBA)
San Francisco 49ers (NFL)
Washington Nationals (MLB)

The Sounders won the award in 2010 after a groundbreaking inaugural year in MLS. This year’s winner will be announced May 22 in New York.

Let’s get to some links:

*     *     *

— Reign FC lost its first of three exhibition during a preseason trip to Japan, 2-0, against INAC Kobe Leonessa on Saturday. Seattle’s home uniforms for the upcoming NWSL season can be seen on the team’s Facebook page.

— On this date four years ago, Sounders FC played its inaugural MLS game. Were you there?

Eddie Johnson, the franchise’s quickest to 15 goals, is a part of the league’s “Don’t Cross the Line” campaign.

— Johnson was also nominated for MLS Goal of the Week. Though Steve Zakuani, who did a lot of the work on that goal, has been honored on a few Team of the Week posts, including this one.

— A Sounders app is now available on Android.

— Portland Timbers defender Andrew Jean-Baptiste mentioned on Twitter (here and here) that he was hit by something thrown from the stands after Saturday’s game at CenturyLink Field. Seems like that stuff is happening more often at the stadium these days.

— Around the league, the commissioner is indicating Florida is becoming more of an expansion priority (implying that New York is becoming less of one), Houston coach Dom Kinnear isn’t happy with the cheaters in MLS, and Colorado goalkeeper Matt Pickens will be out a couple months with a broken arm.

— Also, D.C. goalkeeper Bill Hamid was voted Player of the Week, here’s a reminder of referee assignments for the weekend (Baldomero Toledo will have the Sounders-Earthquakes game Saturday), and here are some highlights from a Q&A with MLS’s chief marketing officer.

— All the controversial plays from last weekend are revisited here.

— Did you see how many guys will be gone during the FIFA window? No surprise there’s a few people thinking MLS shouldn’t be in action.

— In some personnel moves, New York made a trio of signings in Rafinha, Peguy Luyindula and Marius Obekop (releases here and here), and D.C. United signed Daniel Woolard to a new deal.

— Here’s the latest video report from Grant Wahl for FOX Soccer.

— Did you see Jozy Altidore‘s goal over the weekend? I think that’s Goal 25 for him this season. And here’s another piece on Brad Guzan getting his chance to step up.

Michael Owen will be retiring after this season. He was definitely one of my favorites growing up.

— A young player in Greece was banned for life for apparently making a Nazi salute. Yikes.

— Lastly, I knew Frank McDonald, who’s a fun follow on Twitter for Sounders notes, would come through with a Herculez Gomez picture from his time here…
