One coming, one going (Friday links)

Note a Mario Martinez tweet above saying he’s coming back to Seattle. And here’s a tweet from Philip Lund saying he’s off to Denmark to get his visa.

Let’s get to some links:

*     *     *

— The first couple reads of your day should be pieces on Robbie Rogers in The Guardian and The New York Times. Those were his first interviews since coming out and stepping away from soccer earlier this year.

Osvaldo Alonso vs. Kyle Beckerman. Who you got? (I can probably guess)

— From around MLS, New York made a trade with Colorado for forward Andre Akpan, Montreal has Italian forward Daniele Papani in on trial, and here’s a piece from Landon Donovan‘s first interviews since coming back.

— Also, Chivas USA forward Juan Agudelo has impressed his coach with a strong start, Rapids defender Diego Calderon is out several months after knee surgery, and here’s a piece with some insight from academy coaches (including Sounders FC’s Darren Sawatzky).

— I retired my player grades last year (they’re very time-consuming to do right). Here’s some more insight as to why the idea of player grades is a bit flawed.

— Some brave USMNT fans had a clever chant going when leaving Azteca on Tuesday.

— Here’s an interesting column on the power of the press for a soccer country. And here’s a very cool story out of Philadelphia.

— Did you see Portland’s NWSL team could get 10,000 people per game? The turf at Jeld-Wen Field also got a nice vote of confidence recently.

— The Sounders Women have signed a pair out of Cal.

— Another possible scoring record for Messi?

— Lastly, a video featuring Eddie Johnson
